This course is dedicated to scientists and students to learn (sequential) programming of scientific applications with Fortran. The course teaches the newest Fortran standards. Hands-on sessions will allow users to immediately test and understand the language constructs. This workshop provides scientific training in Computational Science from beginners' to advanced level, and in addition, the scientific exchange of the participants among themselves and with the instructors.

Prerequisites:
  • Familiarity with Linux and Linux editors is recommended.
  • Basics/principles of programming (in any language).
  • Basic mathematics (integration and differentiation)
Content levels:
  • Basic: 13 hours
  • Intermediate: 18 hours
  • Advanced: 2 hours
Agenda
Topics to be covered in this course include:
  • Fortran syntax overview
    • Basics
    • Program units, modules, procedures
    • Dynamic data
    • Input and Output
  • Fortran intrinsics
  • Obsolete features of Fortran
  • Multiple source files
  • Compilers for Fortran and their usage
  • Optimization of single processor performance
  • Features of Fortran 2003, 2008 and 2018
Please find the preliminary program of the course here (May 2024 course). All times CEST.
Handout
Registered participants will get a pdf of the slides and a link to the exercises.
Literature and Textbooks
Michael Metcalf, John Reid, Malcom Cohen: "Modern Fortran explained" (ISBN: 978-0-19-881189-3).
Besides the content of the training itself, an important aspect of this event is the scientific exchange among the participants. We try to facilitate such communication by
  • a social event on the evening of the first course day,
  • offering common coffee and lunch breaks and
  • working together in groups of two during the exercises.
Lunch Breaks
We plan to have lunch in the unversity's canteen (Mensa Stuttgart-Vaihingen, have a look at their menu online). Two other near possibilities for lunch are on all days: We will update this information if opening times etc. change and inform you more precisely before the course starts.
Hybrid course
This course will be hybrid, i.e. it will take place at HLRS on-site but it will also be possible to attend online. Participants, online as well as on-site, have to be aware and agree that they might appear in the live video stream taken by a camera in the back of the lecture room or by a webcam on laptops. The live stream will not be saved. We strongly recommend to attend this course on-site since on-site attendance is much more effective and efficient in our experience. Therefore we might give priority to on-site over online participants during registration.
Registration
